Introspection, withdrawal, fragility.
Magnetic dialogue between the figure and the space, namely inner dialogue.
Confrontation with oneself, with pain and memories.
Play of plains in the space and juxtaposition of organic and artificial, expressive and precise elements are making a special atmosphere within the painting.
Likewise in my other works, the space reflects the inner state of the figure.

Besides his movies I like and my favourite series of all times "Twin Peaks", David Lynch keeps inspiring me with his music, as well. This song definitely touches my nerve and it's dreamy but yet uneasy quality is very close to my sensibility. Makes me drown deeper and deeper into myself, to the unforeseen depths...

Dear readers,
my home country Serbia and Bosnia are heavily affected by flooding.
Rainfall in Bosnia and Serbia was the heaviest in 120 years of recorded weather measurements. By 20 May, at least 48 people had died as a result of the flooding, and 30,873 people in Serbia alone have been forced from their homes. You can read more here and #SerbiaFloods.

One month visiting professorship at China Academy of Arts in Hangzhou. I was giving lessons at the CDK (Chinesisch-Deutsche Kunstakademie) Department of Oil Painting (油畫系).
Encounter of different cultures, mentalities, as well as approaches to the art. The experience to remember!

During my stay, we organized closing exhibition of the first year's master students in the Moca Westlake Gallery.






The final exhibition of the first year Master’s students of the Chinese-German Academy of Art (CDK) shows different artistic positions. The special orientation of the CDK allows students an exciting interplay between the traditional and Western art, culture and the mindset. As a result, there is a new, “a third position", which is full of opportunities. This exhibition displays artistic positions of the twelve students who are in the search of their own visual language.
On the one hand, we see a development of the painterly possibilities which are coming out of figuration, as well as lyrical abstract approaches on the other hand.
In the discourse of culturally different spatial and conceptual models, as well as different pictorial traditions, here are appearing interesting approaches to work for the students.
The exhibition enables young artists an overview of the accomplishments in the first Academic year and is a further step towards professionalization and self-reflection.

More on Duende


Mentioning the book of poems "Duende" yesterday, reminded me on another interesting book, namely "Kunst und Leben, Mythen und Tod", Ein Streitgespräch. Recommend! Very interesting conversation between Anselm Kiefer, Mathias Döpfner and Manfred Bissinger.
Here is a part of it:


BISSINGER In Mathias Dopfner Book  Die Freiheitsfalle can be read : "The two primal motives of art are God and a woman. In both cases the point is overcoming the fear of death. On the run from the death one becomes a hermit, the other ecstatic. But the only one who has a chance at least, to be successful at that running away is the artist. A drive for his work, whether he admits it or not, is the hope of immortality."

KIEFER Well, immortality can be a motivation, but it is superficial like most motivations. It has usually not much to do with the result. I am not running away from my death, but rather  at the moment I am doing something that I think managed to be real, when it is like an ecstasy, then I could say : "Now I can even die ." This is the opposite of running away. Roughly speaking: at the moment when it is the most beautiful , I might as well die.

DOPFNER  Moments that are beautiful to die for, I also know. Garcia Lorca had meant it by the term "Duende ". Duende is a moment of maximal concentration, perfection and beauty. The total merger. Lorca describes Duende mainly in bullfighting and flamenco. Duende can be anywhere where art meets life.

BISSINGER In Mathias Döpfners Buch Die Freiheitsfalle ist nachzulesen: "Zwei Urmotive der Kunst sind Gott und Weib. In beiden Fällen geht es darum, die Angst vor dem Tod zu überwinden. Auf der Flucht vor dem Tod wird der eine Eremit, der andere Ekstatiker. Der einzige aber, der beim Davonrennen zumindest eine Chance hat, erfolgreich zu sein, ist der Künstler. Ein antrieb für sein Werk ist, ob er es zugibt oder nicht, die Hoffnung auf Unsterblichkeit."

KIEFER Na ja, Unsterblichkeit, das kann eine Motivation sein, aber sie ist oberflächlich wie die meisten Motivationen. Sie hat mit dem Ergebnis meist nicht viel zu tun. Ich renne nicht vor meinem Tod davon, sondern in dem Moment, wo ich etwas mache, das ich für wirklich gelungen halte, wenn es wie eine Ekstase ist, dann könte ich sagen: "Jetzt kann ich auch sterben." Das ist das Gegenteil von Wegrennen. Salopp gesagt: In dem Moment, in dem es am schönsten ist, könnte ich auch sterben.

DÖPFNER Momente, die zum Sterben schön sind, kenne ich auch. Garcia Lorca hat das mit dem Begriff "Duende" gemeint. "Duende" ist ein Moment maximaler Konzentration, Perfektion und Schönheit. Die totale Verschmelzung. Duende beschreibt Lorca vor allem in Stierkampf und im Flamenco. Duende kann es überall geben, wo Kunst das Leben trifft.
